28 October 2019: Cartaya to Huelva, train to Seville (27 miles-922 total)

Approximate Route. The surface of the bike path was much rougher than the adjacent highway shoulder, so I switched to the highway in parts. I used maps.me to find my Seville hotel, just 1 mile from the Seville Santa Justa Station. It was nearly all by street-side bike path.

Given the short distance, I had plenty of time to get to Huelva for my 3 pm train, but I thought there might be a 12:15 pm. Wrong, so I found a nearby restaurant and had a traditional Spanish lunch, potatoes, egg, and pork loin. Lomo, the Spanish pork loin, is sliced very thin then rapidly fried. I find it leaner than their sausages and ham, and not as chewy. Then off to explore a bit, purchase some fruit, another caffe latte, then to the train station.

Today was overcast with a light fog that occasionally dropped a few bits of water. never rain or any need to break out a jacket. While waiting for the train in Huelva, the guide for my Alcazar tour called that it will be at 4 pm tomorrow an hour later. That is my primary activity, so mostly a nice rest day.

??? Entering Seville. Two things were noticeable from the train, trash, squatter shacks, and garden plots.

I found Pension Virgen de La Luz on booking.com, and selected it for is proximity to the Santa Justa Train Station and Alcazar. When I noted that I was traveling by bike, they said they would put me in a 1st floor room, that's just one floor up from the lobby entrance. It's a double room, double bed, with space to keep my bike and trailer. Pretty good for Seville. It's pretty funky. The room is plain but adequate, they have a shared refrigerator for guest use, and a a 3rd level patio. Unique.

The joys of air travel. My cab was precisely on-time and made the 30 minute trip to Barajas Airport in 15 minutes. At 3 am, downtown Madrid streets were filled with traffic and people. 1 November is All Saints Day, a catch-all holiday for all saints, so none are ignored or forgotten. The cab driver said it's actually a 3-day holiday, beginning 30 October, tying in with Halloween. Traffic was light as soon as we left the city center. In yesterday's post, I remarked on the airline recommendation to arrive 2 or 3 hours before your scheduled departure time. I arrived at 3:15 for my 6 am flight. The check-in did not open until 4 am, by which time a long line of sleepy, grumpy passengers were in position. Being among the first to arrive, I sat on the floor and watched Amazon videos. Purely a sights of Seville  day, all walking and no bike riding. Rather than write about my day, enjoy the photos. Dog of the Day #1 Metropol Parasol or Setas de Seville The Metropol Parasol, popularly known as the Mushrooms of the Incarnation, is a wooden structure with 2 concrete columns that hold the access elevators to the viewpoint and is located in the central Plaza de la Encarnación in the city of Seville. It measures 150 x 70 metres and is approximately 26 metres high. It was the winning project in the competition opened by the Seville City Council to carry out the renovation of the square in which it is located; its designer was the architect from Berlin, Jürgen Mayer. 29 September 2019 Companions My tour companions are the same as on my 2018: Bordeaux to Barcelona bike tour: Michael Gille, Robin Ericksen, and John Hedgepeth. They wanted to return, selecting Andalusia in southeast Spain. Our October timing was set because Robin wanted to devote September to hiking in California and John needs to return by 30 October to celebrate his wife's birthday. We scheduled 4 weeks, will meet in Seville, and booked our flights: Robin and I fly into Madrid and will take the 2.5 hour high-speed train to Seville.
